Irene Steel is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council®. We are committed to manufacturing products that actively contribute to enhancing the sustainability, environmental performance, and economic impact of projects in line with LEED standards for New Construction and Renovations.
Cold-formed steel framing is recyclable, durable, and has less environmental impact than other construction materials. Learn more at buildsteel.org
Cold-formed steel is 100% recyclable, Irene Steel Manufacturer's products can contribute to this credit if the construction waste on the project is properly diverted from the waste stream. The contribution to this credit will vary by project and must be determined by the general contractor and/or sustainable design team.
The U.S. Green Building Council® has determined that a total recycled content of 36.9% may be utilized without documentation for light gauge steel framing. A typical breakdown content of our material is:
Total Recycled Content: 36.9%
Post-Consumer: 19.8%
Pre-Consumer: 14.4%
While some Irene Steel manufacturers have a higher average recycled content, the USGBC® default percentages above are recommended for your project calculations. Project specific recycled content can be provided upon request by contacting your Irene Steel Manufacturer.
Raw material (steel coil) for steel framing products are sourced from a multitude of suppliers. Prior to placing your order let your Irene Steel Manufacturer know there is a regional sourced requirement. This will ensure the appropriate raw materials are sourced in order to meet the requirements for your project. Mill Certifications are available upon request.
We are able to support the US Environmental Protection Agency and their aim to cut climate emissions linked to production of construction materials through Low Embodied Carbon (LEC) Steel. Prior to placing your order let your Irene Steel Manufacturer know there is a LEC requirement. This will ensure the appropriate raw materials are sourced in order to meet the regulatory requirements for your project. Learn more from the EPA about Embodied Carbon of Construction Materials

We actively support "Build America, Buy America", "Buy America" and "Buy American" requirements for steel framing. This is done through sourcing raw material (steel coil) from domestic mills and domestically manufacturing steel framing products . Prior to placing your order let your Irene Steel Manufacturer know there is a "Build America, Buy America", "Buy America" or "Buy American" requirement for your project. This will ensure the appropriate raw materials are sourced in order to meet the regulatory requirements for your project. Learn more from FEMA about "Build America, Buy America" Best Practices
